For several days now, protests over death of George Floyd have been occurring all over America, and many in the media have voiced their support. Including Kevin Conrad, a journalist in Chicago.
“Burn it down, those in power can afford it.” Kevin tweets from his large mansion in a gated community. “I support these people protesting, because I understand what it’s like to feel unheard” he says from his twitter account with over a million followers.
“The thing about privilege is that it rears its ugly head in such subtle ways. I have never had any help. I’ve made it where I am because of my own hard work.”
Kevin Conrad grew up attending private school in rural Wisconsin. His father, Jacob Conrad, was a well-known politician. With the support of his parents, and a few scholarships, Kevin was able to attend Harvard and graduate with a political science degree. He then worked at a newspaper that his father had connections in before moving up the ladder and taking a job in Chicago.
“I hope that, when all of this is over, we see lasting change. I hope that those in power will really begin to listen to those that are suffering. Only by acknowledging our own privilege can we be truly cognizant of those around us.”
