Pope Loses Wager With President Nelson Over Gonzaga Game, Wears BYU Jersey to Work

His Holiness Pope Francis made a splash on Monday morning wearing a BYU basketball jersey while attending to his duties in the Vatican. This was the result of a friendly wager between His Holiness and President Russell Nelson of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“It’s been tradition for a number of years now.” said Pope Francis “Whenever the Zags play BYU Russ and I get on the phone and make a bet.” These bets typically consist of the loser wearing the opposing team’s jersey to work the next weekday, but have included other stakes in the past. “I remember a couple years back I had to send Pope Francis a whole gallon of Creamery chocolate milk after they whipped us in Spokane.” remembers Nelson. “It’s all in good fun though, I have the utmost respect for His Holiness.”

This is just one example of friendly relations between President Nelson and leaders of other faiths. Nelson’s other sporting wagers have included propositions with Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, the highest religious authority of the Sunni Muslims, and the Dalai Lama.

According to sources these bets were placed on the opening coin toss of the Super Bowl and also the winner of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Losers agreed to send the winners an inspirational message about hope and faith every Tuesday for the following year.
