Macklemore Enters BYU’s ‘Macklemore Look-Alike Contest,’ Loses

Macklemore paid a visit to BYU this last week, and went largely unnoticed. During a brief pit stop on his nation-wide tour, the rapper, famous for songs such as “Thrift Shop” and “Same Love,” decided to stop in on what has quickly become one of BYU’s most exciting events– the Macklemore look-alike contest.

We asked participating students to comment on the event. Moroni S., a 21-year-old business student in the Marriott School, said: “I’m frickin excited. I mean, I’ve always loved Macklemore, and I was definitely disappointed that he wrote that song about gay marriage, but whatever.” When asked about his costume, he responded: “Oh wait, is the contest today?”

The contest took place on BYU’s Cougar Quad, where some of the university’s most esteemed names acted as judges– Cosmo the Cougar, David Archuleta, and last year’s reigning champion. We asked David why he was acting as a judge, to which he responded: “Yeah, I don’t really have all that much going on at the moment.”

The contest resulted in an upset, with Macklemore himself placing in 3rd. The winner of the contest was none other than Joseph Holmes, a BYU sophomore and Utah local, who currently resides at the Village Apartments. “Yeah, I bought this big coat at D.I. the other day, but other than that, I just kinda dressed and styled my hair like I normally do.”

Macklemore conceded: “Oh, he definitely looks more like me than I do.”
