Report: BYU rejected bid for Hruska’s Kolaches Bowl before choosing to play in prestigious Independence Bowl

Our BYU Cougar football team represented our school well this year. With impressive showings against every team not located in Boise, BYU finished the season with a very exceptional resume. As one of the top teams in College Football, BYU was in contention for a prestigious bowl game. But even after asserting their dominance over five PAC-12 teams this season, BYU was not offered a spot to play in the Rose Bowl nor any of the bowl games held on New Year’s Day. Not to mention, BYU beat the PAC-12 representative, Utah, earlier this year.

News of this decision to not include BYU in these top-tier bowl games spread quickly throughout Utah Valley. Local businesses were scrambling to sponsor bowl games so that the hometown Cougar would stay in Provo for the post-season.

Surprisingly, the only business to formally offer BYU a bid to their bowl was Hruska’s Kolaches. As one of the most popular hole-in-the-wall places in Provo, there are few who do not love this restaurant. Their line often stretches for multiple blocks as hungry students wait patiently for their beloved kolaches.

“Who doesn’t love Hruska’s Kolaches?” local critic Anton Ego told the Alternate Universe. “My week is not complete until I shove my face with beautiful kolaches.”

Once BYU found out that Hruska’s Kolaches were kind enough to invite them to their bowl game, the entire team was extremely excited about the possibilities.

“I’m not quite sure how a small business such as Hruska was able to find the money for a bowl game, but I’m all for it,” Tyler Allgeier said. “I was told that if I scored a touchdown, I’d get free kolaches for life.”

Unfortunately, the offer was ultimately rejected by the athletic department. Reportedly, there were concerns about the fact that BYU would have to play Timpview High School in the game. Because they didn’t want to lose to Timpview, BYU ultimately choose to play in the Independence Bowl against a much easier opponent.
