How to Craft the Perfect Resume

We spent the last year carefully studying the resumes of all seven BYU students who landed summer internships through LinkedIn. Here’s what they all had in common.

1. Tell the truth

The last thing you want is for the hiring team to catch you in a lie, since companies are always perfectly honest with their employees and their consumers. Use this as an opportunity to demonstrate your humility.

2. Link relevant websites

Consider adding links to things such as your favorite YouTube video, your radically political Twitter account, or even your resume, just to keep them guessing.

3. Say ‘please’

A little courtesy goes a long way. Always remember to be respectful when addressing a potential employer.

4. List your skills

Don’t bother listing skills that aren’t applicable to the position. The hiring team doesn’t care how good you are at linear algebra because they don’t know what that is.

5. Acceptance

Thank you for your interest in this position.

We were truly honored to receive over 20,000 applications this year, making the selection process incredibly competitive.

Although we’re not able to move forward with your application at this time, we want you to know how impressed we were by your background and the thoughtfulness you brought to your submission.

We sincerely hope you’ll consider applying again in the future—we’d love to stay connected.
