Politically aware Utahns are currently in an uproar over the infamous data center plan. Utah is already strapped for water, and the data center is projected to increase temperatures by up to 28 degrees. In a rare show of democratic solidarity, leaders of the project have offered to move the data center somewhere more agreeable, and BYU administrators gave the go-ahead for the MARB.
“We’ve been wanting to tear down the MARB for a while, but we know students really love and cherish the memories in this building, so we’ve been putting it off,” explained Martin Hawes, head of BYU construction.
The data center will be twenty stories tall, and will be cooled using runoff water from campus. One feature of the center will be free showers, where students can shower and the leftover water will be used for cooling purposes. The hope is that sustainability will be maintained as well as on-campus hygiene.
