BYU Administrators Worry as High Gas Prices Lead to Surplus of Parking Spots

The war in Iran has been controversial, having adverse effects on many, and highly disapproved of by most politicians. However, it has had one surprising silver lining: due to high gas prices, there is an excess of parking spots at Brigham Young University.

Economists expect that parking spots will remain plentiful into the fall semester, prompting administrators to remove parking spots throughout campus.

“We plan to remove about 1000 parking spots across campus before the fall semester to accommodate this change,” stated Jennifer Neals, a landscaping administrator for BYU.

Students are less than excited about this change. Many cite the fact that BYU enrollment increases every fall semester, and while parking exists now, it may very well not by the time Fall 2026 rolls around. Others worry that gas prices likely won’t stay hiked for long, and parking will become an issue again when prices drop.
