Five LDS Romance Novels to Read This Summer

Romance novels generally aren’t LDS-friendly. Inappropriate scenes aside, books reflecting the romantic reality of members of the Church just don’t go viral. We’re here to change that.

The Book of Love: Evelyn Banks isn’t sure how she managed to get into BYU without attending seminary, but she’s ready to make up for lost time by starting out with a Book of Mormon class for her first semester. Being fresh out of high school, dating isn’t on her mind… until the TA for her class stands up to introduce himself. Jaxtyn Mckay stands at an easy 6’4” and has been home from his mission for a year. Having saved himself for his mission, he hasn’t found dating easy in college. After a disastrous first midterm for Evelyn, Jaxtyn decides to offer some extra help, purely out of the goodness of his heart… or so he thinks.

Marriage Simulator: Nate Smith has been home from his mission for only a few months, but his mom forces him to take Marriage Preparation in an effort to keep him on the covenant path. He feels out of place in the class, and his worst nightmare comes true when the class project is revealed: Marriage Simulator, an assignment where everyone must role-play a marriage relationship with someone outside of the class for at least three weeks. At a loss, Nate asks a girl he knows from home to help him with the project. They’ve been nothing but friends for years, so it won’t be awkward, right?

Captivated by the Clanker: Sister Brackenshaw, who will be finishing her mission at the end of this transfer, is furious that the zone leaders and sister training leaders in the Iowa Shackeyton Mission are expected to give presentations together this zone conference. To make matters worse, the senior zone leader this transfer is Elder Slingbrough, a known clanker with a pompous attitude. The dislike is mutual–Sister Brackenshaw has never been one to hide her feelings towards overly obedient missionaries. And yet, after the first few Zoom meetings, Sister Brackenshaw is starting to feel Elder Slingbrough growing on her. Things get intense when the two realize Elder Slingbrough is going home this transfer as well…

Chasing Chastity: Lindseigh is coming up on her 35th birthday, and soon. She’s all but accepted her fate of withering away in singlehood in the family ward. The same goes for Gavin, until the two meet at a YSA temple night and fall in love over proxy sealings. Given that Lindseigh and Gavin live a few hours from each other, dates are difficult, but one will happily drive to meet the other. One day, they decide to meet in the middle and have a movie and pool night at a hotel. To keep from falling into temptation, Lindseigh brings along chaperone Shayla and books two rooms. Plans go awry when Lindseigh and Shayla have a falling-out on the way there. Upon arrival, Shayla locks herself in one of the rooms for the night, leaving Lindseigh and Gavin stuck in the single-bedded room across the hall.

Mutual Sterility: Shariah Mist, a 52-year-old BYU Family Science professor has long given up on love. After all, why would any devout man marry her, when fertile women in their 20s and 30s abound? That all changes when after giving a guest lecture in New York City, recent convert Gary Dutch attends and asks for a date. Shariah is hesitant considering he’s only 23, but after he confesses his irreversible vasectomy from before his baptism, she dares herself to hope for an unconventional yet eternal love.
