Another General Conference come and gone, and you only managed to watch one or two sessions, and might have paid attention for a total of 2.5 talks. It happens to us all. Here are some comments to drop into your conversations this week whenever asked about your thoughts on conference.
Level 1: The Vague Redirection
This is your best bet for exiting the conversation without giving away your lack of devotion.
“I think my favorite was the Sunday morning session. But the cinnamon rolls might have been why. What are your conference traditions?”
“The Tabernacle Choir always brings the Spirit, and they totally delivered this weekend. Did you see anyone you know?”
“All of my favorite Apostles spoke! Do you have a favorite speaker out of the Twelve?”
Level 2: The Seemingly In-The-Know
If your professor or Sunday School teacher presses you for a more in-depth insight, here are some comments that will keep you in their good graces.
“I really liked Oaks’ talk. He’s always brought a special legal style to his talks, but I feel like he’s just become more spiritual since becoming the President.”
“I appreciated the diversity among the speakers. It’s becoming more and more common, and I love that speakers are reflecting the global nature of the Church.”
“The 25-minute lessons are still pretty new for me, so I loved that we had some speakers with great insights on how the shortened time helps us feel the Spirit more.”
Level 3: The Gaslighting
These are comments that not only make it seem like you watched conference, but will have your friend wondering if they paid attention as well as you did. With any luck, they’ll feel embarrassed and redirect the conversation themselves.
“There were so many allusions to scriptural prophecies that I’m thinking something big is about to happen.”
“Do you think Elder Kearon’s accent is becoming more American? I feel like it was really coming out in his talk.”
“Utchdorf is just so funny. How did he manage to slip that plane analogy in there? He did it so subtly.”
