BYU Students Accused Of Cultural Appropriation By Oompa Loompa Community For Spray Tans

In the wake of the recent slew of marriage announcements and monthly recaps being posted to instagram, the Oompa Loompa community has voiced concern over BYU students’ overbearing use of artificial tanning.

Oompa Loompa political figure and influencer Hugh Grant recently took to social media with the following statement:

“My culture is not your costume.”

The comment shocked BYU students and faculty and has left many wondering how campus leadership will respond.

“We are alarmed by the rate at which our students are resembling Oompa Loompas,”  said BYU administration during a recent statement.  “While we acknowledge that looking like a pumpkin is a totally valid and desirable aesthetic, we remind our students that their choices affect all of us.”

Local spray tan enthusiasts have responded to the criticism with varying levels of urgency. When asked about her use of artificial tan, Kaitleigh Brooks said,

“Spray tan? What… what spray tan haha. This is totally natural haha.”

Hopefully as the issue comes to light and more awareness is spread, students will return to more natural and humane ways of treating their skin and recommence sunbathing in front of Heritage Halls every day.
