Provo, UT – In a statement released in response to recent backlash surrounding new ROC Pass ticket claim policies, the ROC Board maintained that students with responsibilities that infringe upon athletic event attendance are “not real BYU Cougars.”

The press release reads as follows:

“Dear Students and BYU Alumni,

“A lot of discussion has been made recently regarding our new policy for BYU Football and Men’s Basketball games this upcoming 2026-27 year. It saddens us that so much negative debate has been had surrounding our new policy of ticket allocation being influenced by Olympic sport attendance. Our intention was not to upset people.

“Instead, we want to take this time to remind everyone that it is only poor fans who fail to dedicate every waking moment to BYU athletic events. Being in the student section for any game—from Women’s Volleyball to Men’s Swimming and Diving—is a privilege. Anyone who cannot make the time for at least three full games a week is simply not a real BYU Cougar. We feel saddened by so many who claim homework and part-time jobs are more important than sticking around to the bitter end of a blowout loss on a Tuesday night so that the attendance of a Women’s Basketball game allows for entry to a Men’s Basketball game. Clearly some things are more important than paying rent or passing classes.

“We thought you were better than this, BYU. We hope that this new policy forces the change we hope to see, and promote full ROC student sections at every game, whether it’s the BYU-Notre Dame game in October, or some random Women’s Tennis match at 12pm on a Thursday, because you have to go to the latter to get to the former.”
